For decades the Mustad 94840 remained the standard dry fly hook. Daiichi introduced this hook as an improvement to the standard 94840. The advantages of our 1170 include high carbon steel for more strength and sharpness; chemically sharpened needlepoints for superior penetration and a smaller barb approximately 40% of the wire diameter.

This hook was designed by Jim Lepage and the Orvis Co. and patented as the “Big Eye” hook, in 1990. This hook features an oversized eye to facilitate easy threading of tippet material, and has the dimensions of a modern dry fly hook, including a slightly wider gape than a Mustad 94840 standard dry fly hook.

Ever since “Catch-and-Release” became the popular trend of fly fishers, some individuals have touted the idea of a barbless hook. The advantage being that the fisher need not pinch down the barb. Contrary however to common logic, studies of hooked fish in Idaho and Oregon have confirmed that barbless hooks can actually inflict more damage to a fish than barbed hooks. Therefore, barbless dry fly hooks are less popular (or practical) than dry fly hooks with mini-barbs.

Dennis Brown was instrumental in the early 1990’s in developing fly patterns utilizing glass beads. This hook was designed specifically by Brown and Angler Sport Group to facilitate the use of glass beads in the body of the fly. It has features such as a continuous bend, barbless and standard wire so that beads with small holes will slide on easily.

Continuous bend, up-eye, standard wire, 1X-long, barbless, slightly offset. Uses: Killer Caddis,TM Beaded Nymphs, Scuds, Shrimp, Grubs, Pupae

In the early days of fly tying and fly-fishing, “wet flies” were king. Dry flies and nymphs today are more popular, but wet flies, which are fished subsurface, are still very successful for catching trout, steelhead, and salmon. Wet flies do not closely imitate natural insects or bait fish, but give the impression of emerging mayflies. This hook is a “modern” version of the traditional wet fly hook. The heavy wire helps the fly sink and the extra strength makes this hook a great tool for steelhead and large trout.

Sproat bend, down-eye, 2X-heavy wire 3X-short shank. Uses: Egg Patterns, Spiders, Ants for large Trout & Steelhead

Flies tied on hooks with bent shanks or continuous bends have a more natural shape or look more lifelike according to many fishers.

Continuous bend, down-eye, 1X-fine wire, 1X-short shank, forged, reversed. Uses: Scud, Shrimp, Grubs, Pupae, San Juan Worms, Nymphs

This hook design is similar to hooks used in England and Europe as bait hooks for carp. In fly-fishing, it works great for nymphs, larvae, scuds, shrimp, or bead-head flies. The heavier than standard wire is preferred by some to give flies more weight and more strength.

Continuous bend, up-eye, 1X-heavy wire, forged, reversed. Uses: Scud, Shrimp, Grubs, Pupae, San Juan Worms, Nymphs

This heavy wire version of style 1130 was introduced in 1999 as a response to feedback received from flyfishers who need tougher hooks for heavy powerful fish, like steelhead, and those who want heavier wire to aid the sinking speed of their subsurface flies.

3X-short hooks have been very popular with fishers that used salmon eggs as bait and by flyfishers who use “artificial eggs” as patterns for steelhead trout or salmon. Fly tiers prefer this type of hook for spider and ant patterns which are successful for trout in situations when there is no apparent significant hatch of aquatic insects occurring, such as late summer.

Darrel Martin describes the paradigm or ultimate design for a dry fly hook in his book. Daiichi has translated Martin’s theory into the ultimate dry fly hook. It has the features modern tiers look for; wide gape, mini-barb, etc. Plus the upturned tapered shank presents mayfly wings in a very natural angled position. The 1222 version of this hook features Daiichi’s Crystal(TM) Finish which is a white, silvery plate. A fish looking up at a fly with a “Crystal Finish” hook will find that hook almost invisible, especially with the sky in the background.

Paul Weamer, a respected guide in the famed Catskill region of NY State, developed this hook to tie his series of mayfly imitations called “Truform Flies”. The upturned shank allows the creation of mayfly imitations that have a more realistic profile.

Daiichi introduced this up-eye version of the scud hook in 1990. By incorporating an up-eye, this design gives the hook a larger “bite”. In other words, a down-eye would significantly restrict the hooking ability of this hook by closing off the gape.
